An adjuvant is any substance in a formulation or added to the spray tank to improve activity or application characteristics.

There are two main groups of Adjuvant.

1. Activators which enhance performance can increase activity, absorption into plant tissue, and rainfastness, also decrease photodegradtion of herbicides and alter the physical characteristics of the spray solution.
2. Special purpose adjuvants which widen the range of conditions under which a given pesticide formulation is useful, may alter the physical characteristics of the spray solution, include compatibility agents, buffering agents, antifoam agents, and drift control agents.
