Pathfinder 5

Article Image

Slugs are a major pest of winter cereal crops and oilseed rape. Slug damage generally occurs in two forms: Pre-emergence of the plant (seed hollowing, grazing the emerging shoot, etc), and post emergence - leaf shredding. Once the plant reaches the 5-6 leaf stage and is growing well slugs are rarely a problem. When monitoring traps, 3 or more slugs per trap indicate a significant risk.

Pathfinder 5 contains metaldehyde which is a specific molluscicide acting by irreversibly destroying the mucus producing cells of the slug causing death. The slugs will not recover once the cells are destroyed. Because metaldehyde acts specifically on slugs it has minimum effect when used as directed on target organisms such as;

  • Earthworms
  • Carabid beetles
  • Other soil fauna

Key Benefits

  • For use on all edible and non edible crops
  • Maximum dose 18kg/ha
    • Where slug populations are very high or where weather conditions remain favourable for slug activity over a long period subsequent applications may be required
    • In these circumstances two reduced rates of 7kg per hectare have been shown to be effective in Barclay Crop Protection trials
  • 90 pellets / square metre at full rate
  • Efficient control of all slug species
  • Contains a bittering agent to deter mammal feeding
  • Minimum effect on non-target species

Time of application

  • Pathfinder 5 can be applied throughout the year
  • Broadcast pellets as soon as slugs are active in the field
  • The application should be repeated as necessary after crop emergence if slug attack is heavy
