Kerb Granules - for weed control around shrubs, trees & ornamentals

Article Image

KERB GRANULES is a pre-or post-emergence residual herbicide that provides long-term residual control of annual and perennial grasses and a wide range of other weeds in farm and commercial forestry, ornamental plantings and recreation areas.

Propyzamide works by inhibiting cell division, disrupting the growth process and leading to eventual death of the plant. The lethal dose accumulates gradually through the root system. Desirable species are protected by the depth of their rooting systems, and since propyzamide is only absorbed through the roots, applications can be made over the foliage of tolerant species.

The Forestry Commission (UK) recommends a weed-free zone of one square metre for successful establishment and growth of young trees. Even in mature trees, weeds can lead to a reduction in vigour and an increased risk of pest/disease attack.

KERB GRANULES are especially useful for the control of weed growth around trees, shrubs and roses along fence lines, hedge lines and walls, where mowing can be difficult.

KERB GRANULES will control an exceptionally wide spectrum of grass weeds, as well as many broad-leaved weeds. For optimum control, weeds which are larger than label guidelines for Kerb Granules at the time of application may be better treated with a glyphosate product as long as it is safe to do so without contacting any susceptible foliage on desirable plants.

Key Features

  • Weed control around ornamental tress and shrubs and all popular tree species
  • One application normally provides season long control
  • Excellent plant safety
  • Broad spectrum of control - both grasses and broadleaved weeds
  • No long term residual build up in the soil

Mode of action

Propyzamide has very low water solubility, this property reduces movement through and across the soil profile. It will therefore not move significantly from the top 3 - 5 cm of the soil profile after application.

Propyzamide inhibits cell division in susceptible weeds, leading to disruption of growth and eventual death. This effect is achieved by a gradual accumulation of a lethal dose through the root systems of susceptible species. Safety to desirable species is achieved by depth protection of the root system. It is very important when transplanting that the roots do not come into contact with any pre-planting applied Kerb Granules.

Applications can be made over the foliage of tolerant species as Kerb Granules will only enter plants through the roots.

Yellowing or chlorosis of the foliage is the first symptom seen in treated weeds. This follows in time by death of the foliage and then the whole plant.

Symptoms seen in target grass weeds include the characteristic swelling of the stem base - the 'spring onion' effect.

Susceptible weeds take from 4 - 12 weeks to die after application.

Kerb Granules breakdown quickly once temperatures begin to rise. 50% will break down within 30 days when temperatures reach 25 0C

Application Recommendation

Kerb Granules is recommended on transplanted forest trees at any stage, either pre, or post planting provided they have become established for at least 4 weeks by the earliest time of treatment i.e. 1st Oct.

SUMMARY OF DIRECTIONS FOR USE

Soil Type

All soil types may be treated. However, efficacy may be reduced on soils with high organic matter content or with excessive organic debris and on ploughed-up turf.

Timing

Application of Kerb Granules may be made from the 1st October to the 31st January and on mineral soils no later than 28th February, subject to specific label instructions. Optimum timing is November.

Growth Stage of Crop

  • - Trees (excluding Ornamentals) - at any stage either pre-planting or post-planting.
  • - Ornamental Trees and Shrubs - after they have been planted in their final position for at least one season and have become firmly established. When planted in the Spring treatment can be made the following Autumn.

Soil and Weather Conditions

Best residual action is obtained in moist, cold soils, when soil temperatures are declining and are expected to stay low. Target temperature is 10OC. Kerb Granules can be applied in all weather conditions. Application on top of snow and to severely frozen ground is not recommended where surface run-off is likely to occur.

Application Rates

Forestry, Ornamental Trees and Shrubs:

3.8 grams per square metre around each tree.  Equivalent to 38.0 kg per treated hectare. Ensure even application. Max number of treatments is one per year.
