When re-seeding remember your PEES!

When re-seeding remember your PEES!

P is for Preparation: Start by taking a soil sample.

P is for Preparing the field by destroying the previous pasture using Gallup 360 to kill both weeds and other undesirable plants. Gallup 360 is used at 5L/ha in long term leys and 6l/ha in permanent pasture.

P is for pH and this is critical as most seedling grasses like a pH of 6.5 whilst they establish themselves but will tolerate a pH as low as 6.0 once they have established their root system.

P is for Phosphate the single most important major element required during the first four to six weeks after sowing. Use a water soluble form at a rate determined by the results of the soil analysis.

P is for Pressing the seedbed so that the young seedlings can adsorb moisture and nutrients which will allow them to establish more quickly.

P is for Pests like leatherjackets which can ruin any new sowings if they are present. Use an approved insecticide to prevent any damage. Clinch XL gives excellent control of leatherjackets and is used at 1.5 L/ha.

P is for Puddling which needs to be avoided so do NOT graze newly sown leys until the soil conditions and crop are ready.
